The espresso martini is a modern classic that needs no introduction, but we’re going to give you one anyway. Invented by the late, great bartender Dick Bradsell at the behest of a now world-famous model who requested a pick-me-up cocktail; the nation’s favourite caffeinated cocktail was born.

There are now many iterations of the cocktail, but illycaffĂ©’s classic rendition using illy coffee liquor reigns supreme. It goes without saying that this is perfect served as an after dinner cocktail, but let’s face it, it’s superb any time. 1. Extract a heavy shot of espresso from a coffee machine using the naked handle. If you don’t have an espresso machine, use a percolator to achieve an espresso blend.

2. Fill a shaker with ice and add the ingredients. Shake hard for roughly 8 seconds.

3. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a couple of coffee beans. Serve with your finest chocolatey dessert.
