Founders of the business, husband and wife team Z He and Alex Peffly, launched the first Bun House in 2017 and have since gone on to open Tea Room, a speakeasy cocktail lounge and restaurant on Greek Street, and Pleasant Lady Trading food Stall, both in Soho and within The Kitchens at Old Spitalfields market in east London.
With Z having moved to the UK from Guangzhou, Chinatown has always felt like a noisy, thrilling slice of home in the middle of London. It’s particularly exciting for Bun House to open in the heart of Chinese food in the city, hoping the buns will bring back memories of home for many.
For the food, Z works very closely with her in-house chefs to design the menu for both Bun House and Tea Room. She draws a lot inspirations from her childhood favourites which crossover with other culinary experiences she has garnered from travelling as an adult. Both worlds have created a very distinct menu. Bun house is in fact Z's very first independent culinary venture. Before this she was an interior architect by profession. This project gave her a blank canvas for design, and the food aspect is purely passion driven.
“We want Bun House to be an experience for people, offering new and interesting authentic Chinese food that isn’t currently found in London, at an accessible price point with the quality of our product is always at the forefront of our ethos. ' 'London has such a great, diverse and adventurous food scene – we would love for locals, tourists, and everyone alike to experience and enjoy our food.”
