Taste of London: The Festive Edition was an amazing success – the Christmas season has been toasted in fine style! Mouth-watering dishes were served, delicious cocktails were drunk, world-class chefs including Tom Kerridge, Marcus Wareing and Angela Hartnett wowed the crowds on the AEG Taste Theatre and great fun was had by all!
Congratulations to Oldroyd for winning #BestinTaste with their porcini and chestnut risotto, truffle mascarpone. Honourable mentions go to runners up Tredwell’s for their crispy cod cheeks with kimchee and buttermilk and to Kurobuta for their octopus donuts.
Thursday saw Tom Kerridge and his Hand and Flower’s right-hand man Chris Mackett take to the AEG Taste Theatre stage where they shared tips on creating the ultimate festive pub grub. Visitors flocked to the brand new Patissier’s Pantry where they took part in cake decorating, merry macarons and cupcake piping workshops . Word quickly spread about the incredible dishes coming from the Action Against Hunger stand, where, between the mouth-watering 5 star burgers created by top chefs Pascal Aussignac (Club Gascon), Atul Kochar (Benares), Sophie Michell, Peter Gordon (Providores) and Peter Hunt, we couldn’t decide our favourite.
Visitors to Friday’s Taste session were in the mood for festive shopping, with many getting ahead of the game and picking up delicious food and drink in themed rooms including La Fromagerie which showcased the finest cheese from our isles, the Connoisseurs Club brimming with top of the range produce from Somerset Charcuterie, Disaronno and Adamas Caviar UK, and the Producers’ Market. At the restaurants, Darbaar‘s Grilled Lamb Vindaloo was a clear early favourite with the heat of the dish warming hands and stomachs. As day turned to night, delectable cocktails were served – Barsmith Event Bar‘s Pride & Passion martini was a hit, as was Kent Cider Company‘s Mulled Cider – the perfect accompaniment to a winter’s evening. Marcus Wareing answered questions during an informative live Q&A on the AEG Taste Theatre where we learnt that his favourite food to eat (besides his own) is his wife’s cooking! Aww!
Croquemboche was the order of the day on Saturday at Kathy Slack’s (Gluts & Gluttony) baking session in the AEG #TakeTasteFurther kitchen. Our Saturday Daily Special restaurant Foley‘s hand visitors jumping for joy over their delicious octopus with black sesame mayo icon dish. We welcomed Fitzrovia neighbours Jun Tanaka (Ninth London) and Matt Robinson (Dickie Fitz) on the AEG Taste Theatre, and caught a handful of chefs frozen in time to take on the #mannequinchallenge (see above). Tea lovers discovered new taste sensations with T2 Tea’s amazing range of game-changing brews, from chai to matcha and more. Craft beer lovers sipped and sampled their way through the all-new Craft Beer Trail, learning tasting notes from producers including Moncada Brewery, Gipsy Hill Brewing, Fourpure Brewing Co and more. The tour finished conveniently next to Deco Noir’s Piano Bar where eighteenth century Broadwood baby grand piano Monty and pianist rolled out sin-a-long hits we all really really wanted, from Spice Girls (!) to Leonard Cohen.
Sunday Funday was in full force at Taste during our final session. Visitors sharpened their skills in the brand new Skillery presented by Flint and Flame, where workshops ranged from sushi rolling and roti spinning to knife skills and more. Experimental dessert specialist Chin Chin Labs had jaws dropping with their Christmas tree cone with pine candy floss. The festive theme continued with bubblesdogs‘ Santa’s Sausage dish, a popular dog with Christmas stuffing, cranberry chutney and crispy parsnips. As the sun went down glasses of Champagne Laurent-Perrier were raised in the sumptious Laurent-Perrier Club House to toast another amazing year at the stunning Tobacco Dock.
